Desperation spurred medical breakthrough

In 1983, surgeons transplanted lab-grown skin onto two young brothers who had sustained life-threatening burns and had too little unburned skin for conventional grafts. The experimental treatment was discovered during research on embryonic development, and the lab staff refocused their efforts on growing enough skin to save the boys' lives.
