In Camden, N.J., where new census data show that the poverty rate is 39.3%, the Center for Hunger-Free Communities gave cameras to 10 women living in poverty and asked them to document the challenges they face. One woman, Kathy, photographed paperwork associated with her search for affordable housing. "All the housing that's low-income is like a year waiting list or more," she said. Another participant, Damaris Alecia, noted similar struggles. "If [people] have affordable housing and they have heat, then maybe there would be less violence," she said.
