Rockefeller probes 12 popular sites in privacy probe

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., is investigating a dozen sites on how they collect and use personal information. Rockefeller says he's focusing on sites that include About.com, Self.com and Ehealthforum.com because data brokers are stonewalling on their sources of user information, which they package by category label. "Whether such characterizations are positive, negative or erroneous, the process of determining these characterizations is not transparency to the consumer and is beyond the consumer's control," Rockefeller said.
