Jobless claims drop as firms gain confidence

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits fell to 305,000 last week, down 5,000 from a week earlier and well below the 325,000 expected by economists. The figures bode well for the economy, although analysts' optimism was tempered by news that the consumer price index edged down in the second quarter.
