Inspect trees before climbing to avoid accidents, tree trimmer says

Tree-trimming companies should require their employees to check the base of trees before they climb it to prevent accidents, said Siaosi Tongotea, a foreman with HTM Contractors in Honolulu. He said his tree trimmers use a 3-foot-long metal tool to determine the condition of the tree by sticking the instrument into its base. "[I]f it goes more than a foot then you know there's a problem with it," Tongotea said.
