Spay alternative is not best for the pet

Veterinary reproductive specialist Bruce Eilts explains the estrus cycle in female dogs and discusses alternative methods of birth control using hormones, pointing out that there is currently no drug marketed for estrus control in dogs. Hormones have serious side effects and are not generally needed because of the dogs' reproductive stages, so Dr. Eilts recommends that any dog not intended for breeding be spayed before their first heat cycle.
