Rail supporters call for Canada to waive border fee

Parties on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border are clamoring for Canada to waive a fee on Amtrak trains running between Seattle and Vancouver. Canada wants to bill the Washington Transportation Department about $550,000 a year to staff a border crossing. Amtrak's second daily Cascades service has carried more than 245,000 passengers in the past 13 months and has brought millions into the Vancouver economy. "The new fee will hurt our state and it will reduce cross-border economic activity that helps both our countries," said Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash.
