Foreign language campaign encourages everyone to learn 1,000 words

As part of a national campaign in the U.K., groups are urging people to learn 1,000 words in a new language. The organizations behind the push want to encourage people of all education levels to speak a second language. They picked 1,000 words because that's enough to hold a basic conversation. "We are not expecting instant fluency," campaign director Bernadette Holmes said. "Yet if everyone were capable of at least 1,000 words in a new language, social attitudes and economic prospects would be significantly enhanced ..."
