Center performs 520-plus kidney transplants in 2 decades

The Kidney Transplant Center at Erlanger hospital in Chattanooga, Tenn., has performed more than 520 kidney transplants since it opened in 1989. About 800 people in the city are in need of kidney transplants, an expert at the center said. Obesity, which could lead to hypertension and diabetes, is a major contributor to the increase in the number of those who have chronic kidney diseases and might eventually require kidney services and transplants, experts say.
