SAIC data breach involves 4.9 million military patients

Science Applications International has informed TRICARE of a breach involving lost backup tapes containing protected health data of about 4.9 million military patients. The backup tapes were used to glean data from the Military Health System's EHR and involved patients treated at military facilities in San Antonio between 1992 and Sept. 7, 2011. The risk from the breach is considered low because data retrieval would require access to specific hardware and software as well as knowledge of the data structure.
