Sports stars, gimmicks draw Detroit students to school for count

Detroit schools hoped to lure students to school Wednesday -- the day attendance figures are used to determine state funding -- by offering incentives and, at one school, the chance to meet sports stars. Each student secures $7,550 for the district, which is struggling financially. Educators said they enticed students to come to school Wednesday with raffles, pizza and other gimmicks but added that attendance is something students should strive for year-round.
