UK school leader is critical of state's role in education

Tim Hands, head of Magdalen College school and new chairman of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference in the United Kingdom, suggested recently that the government has a stranglehold over education -- most notably with its focus on league tables in education. "The story of the last 50 years is, I suggest, the intrusion of government and the disappearance of the child. More radically put, it is the intrusion of the state, and the disappearance of love," he said.
