Report outlines practices to prevent catheter-associated UTIs

The Joint Commission has released a report on its 2012 National Patient Safety Goal for increased prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections in hospitals. The commission is calling for hospitals to use evidence-based guidelines in managing urinary catheters. About 450,000 CAUTIs are recorded every year in hospitals, making them a leading cause of hospital-acquired infection, according to the Joint Commission.
