Panel supports resistance training for keeping children fit

Many parents are concerned that exercise might put children at greater risk for injuries or damaged bone development, but a panel of doctors and fitness experts said childhood is the optimal time for resistance training to improve bone mass. In a consensus statement, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine and endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the International Federation of Sports Medicine and the National Collegiate Athletic Association, experts recommend children's resistance training activities be supervised by qualified professionals who earned strength and conditioning certifications.
