FD technology upgrades in Danville, Va., earn innovation award

Improvements to GIS and auto vehicle location systems, as well as the addition of heavy-duty laptops for firefighters, earned the Danville, Va., Fire Department a 2011 Governor's Innovation in Local Government Award. The GIS and AVL systems were integrated to track vehicles, locate addresses and provide directions, while the Toughbook computers work in rough conditions and connect firefighters with 9-1-1 dispatchers. The next step is equipping the police department with the same technology.
