For Graphicsland, finding a niche was like printing money

Jerry Feil says he started his printing business, Graphicsland, as a college student, and for a while he enjoyed a profitable niche printing 35-millimeter slides for corporate presentations. When PowerPoint came along and no one needed slides anymore, Feil was stumped. "You scratch your head and watch business dropping, and you wonder what to do next," he says. After some brainstorming, he shifted his expertise to stickers and signs, launching two websites that allow customers to design graphics that he prints on the appropriate medium. That, in turn, has evolved into a profitable niche printing scientific posters for medical students, which accounts for 32% of his $2.8 million in revenue.
