Rules for dentists and dental plans will change under the ACA

The Affordable Care Act requires states or the federal government to set up exchanges from which residents can buy insurance beginning in 2014, and the exchanges will include dental plans, California Dental Association lobbyist Allison Barnett says. Health and dental plans sold through exchanges will be required to provide dental benefits for people younger than 21, but they will not be required to cover adults, she said. Other parts of the Affordable Care Act will affect dentists as employers, such as requirements to provide insurance coverage to employees and certain tax deductions.
