Study links anemia to increased surgical complication risk

A study in The Lancet revealed that patients with anemia were 35% more likely to experience postoperative complications and had a 42% increased mortality risk compared with their nonanemic counterparts. Researchers studied more than 227,000 surgery patients and found that the increased risk of postoperative complications ranged from 31% for those diagnosed with mild anemia and 56% for those with moderate-to-severe anemia.
