ICD-10 adoption needs information systems upgrading, careful planning

As care facilities and physician groups prepare to implement the ICD-10 coding system for diagnosis and medical procedures, which is required by Oct. 1, 2013, some of their clinical and financial systems must be changed or replaced, a health information management director at a hospital said. The move from ICD-9 to ICD-10 will be challenging, but the transition should go smoothly with careful planning, he added.
