Generator failures at nuclear plants spark maintenance questions

The nuclear industry may need to re-examine its maintenance plans after several emergency generators have failed when needed. Some stopped working because of earthquakes, but at least a dozen have failed since 1997 because of "mechanical failures or because they were offline for maintenance." Gerald McCoy, a branch chief with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, said, "We are concerned with the fact that diesels are having issues, and that could very well be the subject of future inspections."
