Security concerns continue to plague smart grid adherents

Security remains one of the leading hurdles to widespread smart grid adoptions and, not surprisingly, was foremost on the minds of participants at ABB's recent Western Utility Executive Conference. According to ComEd's Mark Browning, persistent issues include problems with interoperability between customer- and utility-installed hardware, a lack of adequate encryption and standards, and a regulatory environment that emphasizes return on investment over security.
