Wis. county finds wellness helps workers make better choices

Increasing health claims for workers led Fond du Lac County in Wisconsin to implement a wellness program that included consistent messaging, health-risk assessments and a virtual clinic where staff can consult with a nurse practitioner. The county, which presented data at an employee benefits forum, offers financial incentives for wellness participation and this year has just a 1% increase in its health coverage costs, with claims attributed to lifestyle choices falling over time from 70% to 6%.
