"Lesson study" professional-development model shows promise

Some Washington, D.C., teachers are using a professional-development model from Japan that encourages teachers to collaborate and perform a "lesson study." Teachers research every aspect of a classroom lesson, such as the words they use, to improve student learning. "I've never, ever been involved in any professional development that's been as enriching," one eight-year teacher said.
