USP drafts recommendation for Medicare coverage of ED drugs

Medicare's prescription drug coverage could include drugs to treat erectile dysfunction when the benefit begins in 2006, as a result of a decision by U.S. Pharmacopeia to place Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and similar drugs on its draft list of recommended drugs to cover. Drugmakers currently market their pills to baby boomers, who are not yet eligible for Medicare, and the drugs are "fairly far down on the priority list" for seniors, said Robert Reischauer, president of the Urban Institute.
