Martin Philbert, who heads an FDA subcommittee that is working to determine whether bisphenol A is safe to use in food containers, should step aside unless the agency can explain how it will avoid a conflict of interest between Philbert and an outspoken critic of regulation who believes BPA is perfectly safe, according to this editorial. The critic, retired manufacturer Charles Gelman, recently made a $5 million donation to a University of Michigan research center that is co-directed by Philbert.
