When Sir Howard Stringer took over as chairman and chief executive of Sony, he wanted the engineers to collaborate across divisions but had trouble breaking down the silos. Then he found a useful vehicle: the company orchestra. "Here they were, right in front of me, engineers from all of the company bound together only by their talent in music," he says. "If they managed to collaborate, why couldn't the organization?"
