USDA pledges to support school-meal programs

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has informed school districts that it will make funds available to support subsidized meal programs during the federal government shutdown. The news comes after Michigan announced it only could support free and reduced-price meals until Nov. 1, at a cost of about $1.3 million daily. The School Nutrition Association has posted the USDA's memo on its website because the USDA's website is not operating during the shutdown.
