Technology, materials allow skyscrapers to reach new heights

Developers continue to build skyscrapers around the world even as the financial crisis spreads globally. Dubai-backed developer Nakheel, for example, recently announced plans to build a $38 billion, 3,000-foot skyscraper in the country. Observers note that architects and designers are able to create taller structures because technology and materials have become more advanced. About 36 buildings have reached heights of 1,000 feet or more, according to the Council on Tall Buildings & Urban Habitat.
