Cleveland Clinic performs record number of lung transplants

The Cleveland Clinic in Ohio on Thursday performed its 131st lung transplant, surpassing the 128 procedures undertaken by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2007. The Clinic said it expects to perform more than 160 of the transplants before Jan. 1. About one-third of patients at the Clinic undergo lung transplants within a 30-day waiting period, higher than the 8.4% national rate for the same waiting period. The increase in transplants is attributed to several factors, including the clinic's acceptance of patients turned away by other hospitals for being considered high-risk.
