Lack of a supercommittee deal could leave health care hurting

An across-the-board budget cut would affect medical research, disease prevention and many public health programs, experts say. If the deficit-reduction supercommittee does not reach a plan that can be approved by Congress, automatic cuts that would be triggered include a 2% Medicare payment reduction to physicians, hospitals and other providers.
