"Formal construction" starts on $3.9B Tappan Zee Bridge north of NYC

Installation of permanent steel pilings will start this week for the foundation of the new $3.9 billion Tappan Zee Bridge across the Hudson River 30 miles north of New York City. "Once completed, drivers in Rockland, Westchester and surrounding areas will finally have a safer, less congested bridge that will include a walkway for pedestrians and bikers and accommodate future mass transit," said Gov. Andrew Cuomo. The project is said to be "the largest single contract for an infrastructure project in all of North America," according to Brian Conybeare, an adviser to the governor.
