Larger portion of public-school students come from low-income families

Nearly half of all public-school students in 17 states came from low-income families in 2011 -- up from four in 2000, according to a recent report from the Southern Education Foundation. Officials say the long-term trend is particularly troubling, and the changing demographic is expected to take a toll on achievement.
