UPS tests lightweight delivery vans equipped with plastic composites

UPS is piloting a lightweight delivery van developed by Utilimaster and Isuzu. The van has a composite inner layer, injection-molded bumpers and a plastic floor and roof. The vehicles are engineered with fuel efficiency in mind, as total weight and cost are considered along with "fastening techniques, the manufacturability, the environmental impact of the material, the recyclability of the material," among other traits, said John Knudtson, an executive at Utilimaster.
