EPA to reconsider tougher emission rules for refineries

The Environmental Protection Agency will consider imposing tougher emissions regulations on the country's refineries in response to Houston Mayor Bill White's assertion that the agency underestimated the cancer risk for people who are exposed to benzene, 1,3-butadiene and other harmful chemicals from nearby refineries. The Bush administration had concluded that current refinery emissions posed an acceptable health risk.
