California's $1B I-405 project behind schedule, over budget

The $1 billion Interstate 405 widening project in California is 15 months behind schedule and $100 million over budget. The straps in the interior of the mechanically stabilized earth walls apparently failed, leading to a buckling of the concrete retaining walls built for the new car-pool lane. So the walls needed to be rebuilt, contributing to the delay, and utilities needed to be relocated, contributing to the increase in costs.
