Feds recommend steps for protecting electric grid from solar flares

The nation's electric grid is not adequately protected from the potential damages of the sun's radiation, according to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, which is proposing a series of solutions for bolstering the nation's defenses against geomagnetic storms. The agency is recommending new guidelines -- to be overseen by the North American Electric Reliability Corp. -- that would require companies to assess their vulnerability to solar flares and take steps to upgrade equipment and transmission networks as needed.
