How electric vehicles can help mitigate renewable-energy attrition

The market for electric and hybrid vehicles continues to grow, with nearly two dozen models already on the road, a trend that offers automakers and smart grid proponents an opportunity for mutually beneficial cross-pollination, says climate strategist Boyd Cohen. According to Cohen, the expanding base of EVs represents a tailor-made solution to the lack of adequate energy storage facing the renewable-energy sector. Vehicle-to-grid technologies can enable EVs to become "virtual power plants," says Jay Giraud, CEO of REV Technologies, and can boost the efficiency of the grid while putting money back into car owners' pockets.
