Maintain an ongoing dialogue with the boss about the skills you need to improve so it's easier to ask for a promotion when the opportunity presents itself, says John Beeson, author of "The Unwritten Rules." "If you approach this the right way -- especially if you stress that you're thinking about your future and have no immediate plans to go anywhere -- most managers will be amenable," he says.
