Consumers throughout north India celebrated Dhanteras, the first day of the Diwali Festival, by purchasing clothing, jewelery and other goods. Hindus consider the day to be auspicious for shopping. "The economic triggers may suggest we are approaching slowdown, but at the consumption level it is still insulated," said Debashish Mukherjee, a partner at AT Kearney. "As a result, retailers and consumer durable makers are seeing good Diwali sales."
