Sick workers cause rates to increase at small businesses

One sick employee can cause the insurance premium for a small business to skyrocket because its risk pool is so limited. Although health care reform legislation might fix that, NFIB says the government-run insurance plan and employer-mandated insurance provision may hurt small businesses and the overall economy. "The majority of the business community believes an employer mandate will further harm the fragile economy, especially for small businesses," says NFIB's Amanda Austin.
