New center to bolster algal-fuels research in Hawaii

The new Center for Microbial Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa will help advance research into algae-based biofuels, said Paul Kemp, the center's associate director. The National Science Foundation will give $4 million annually to the center for 10 years, and the University of Hawaii will allocate an additional 30% of that per year. Other grants will raise the center's annual operating budget to as much as $9 million.
