Algae production could become profitable in 10 months, exec says

The algae-based bioprocessing industry is less than a year away from being profitable, said Green Plains Renewable Energy CEO Todd Becker. GPRE and partner BioProcess Algae have installed a commercial-scale algae-growing facility at GPRE's ethanol plant in Shenandoah, Iowa, and plan to start selling algae for industrial uses in the spring. GPRE hopes to install the system at its eight other ethanol facilities in the next three years, Becker said.
