Survey: 4 in 10 cellphone users download app in one month

In August, nearly 40% of U.S. cellphone owners downloaded an app, and the proportion was double that for tablet owners, according to a survey by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project. The most popular apps were those that provide regular news and topical updates and those that help users stay in touch with friends and family.
