October brings mixed results for U.S. retailers

Retailers reported a mixed bag of sales results for October, setting the stage for a promotional and fiercely competitive holiday season. Among department stores, luxury merchants including Saks and Nordstrom fared the best, and Macy's reported a 2.5% increase that beat analysts' expectations. But several midpriced and discount chains, including Dillard's, J.C. Penney and Kohl's, reported sales declines.
