Asia telecom operators may lose revenue as smartphones spread

Over-the-top social media messaging is set to cause a radical shift in the mobile messaging market in countries in Asia where smartphone ownership is on the rise, such as Singapore where smartphone penetration is at 90%, according to a report by Ovum. The rise of social messaging via smartphones will cost telecom companies $54 billion by 2016. Experts say the trend toward social messaging is part of a larger trend in how mobile is changing communications.
