Critics say food-safety system is inconsistent

Critics have branded the U.S. food-safety system as fragmented, overlapping in authority and suffering from budgetary constraints, resulting in tainted foods slipping through inspection systems. Congress is planning to restructure the system and considering several proposals, including the creation of a single food-safety agency. "What we have seen this summer is obviously a wake-up call," Richard Raymond, USDA undersecretary for food safety, said.
