Seven Catholic D.C. schools to become charters

Seven predominantly black elementary parochial schools in Washington, D.C., will remove religious symbols and end school prayer so that they can be publicly financed, archdiocese officials said Monday. The archdiocese said it could no longer subsidize the inner-city schools' $4 million operating deficit, but some parents expressed disappointment in the decision.
