ACO rules highlight potential roles for nurses, experts say

Nursing groups are happy CMS listened to them and crafted rules that recognize the value of patient-centered quality care for accountable care organizations. While the rules do not specifically address nurses, experts see these professionals playing key roles as care managers, educators and transition coordinators. Registered nurse Cheryl Schraeder of the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Nursing said there are many opportunities for nurses because of their skills; registered nurse Patty Jones of consultant Milliman said nurses are the logical choice to help patients navigate care.
