Cellular emerges as complement to utility communication networks

Public utilities have latched onto cellular networks to help transmit the real-time data needed to support smart-grid deployments, according to Pike Research. "Few utilities will rely on just one network, but cellular connectivity will be an important part of the mix in neighborhood area networks and wide area networks for smart meters" and other applications, Pike analyst Bob Gohn said.
