Companies seek to develop next-generation canola oil

Cargill and BASF are seeking to genetically modify canola plants to produce the nutritionally important long-chain eicosapentaenoic and docosahexaenoic fatty acids. The next-generation canola oil -- which the companies hope will be on the market by 2020 -- could improve shelf-life issues that limit commercialization of fish oil-based omega-3-enriched products.
